Mac EVDO card in May
I happened by Om Malik's blog today and saw, as CTIA
winds down, he's caught wind of an EVDO card
from Novatel Wireless that's due in May. The best news is, it's going to
be an Express card, and it'll work in the MacBook Pro, no Windows partition needed. So what? Well I guess C.K. can
finally get back to playing World of Warcraft in Central Park (and freaking
out the squares). If you just can't wait until next month, when they are rumored to appear, you can keep an eye on this
MacBook Pro page on EVDOinfo.com.
Wireless is great, especially if it's everywhere. There is a USB EVDO device from
Novatel that'll be out "later this year."

Will Verizon's regular PCMCIA cards work on my PowerBook G4? This blog made it sound like we just finally got a card that works on Macs.
I was thinking of subscribing to Verizon's service a couple days ago but couldn't find confirmation on their page that their cards would work on Macs.

First of all, sorry for the double post. But after searching for a while I managed to find out that Kyocera's EV-DO card available from Verizon will work on OSX 10.3.2 or later. That model will only work if you get it from Verizon according to their website. So now the question for me is, get this now for my G4 PB or wait a few months till I can get my hands on a 17" MBP and buy the express version.

So will this thing work with Sprint's EV-DO network, or is it carrier-specific?

#1, I've been able to get a Verizon EVDO card to work on a Powerbook G4. There were instructions floating around awhile back re: editing the plist; it did work for me.
Flaked out if you put it to sleep and came back, though.

The existing Novatel EVDO card (V620 and S620) will work on OS X no problem. Just contact Novatel directly.
They also support HSDPA on Cingular and in Europe with OS X, but again, you have to contact them directly.

I have the most recent EVDO card offering from Verizon, the Verizon PC 5740 Card. It is fully compatible with Mac OS X right out of the box - no hacks, no third party drivers, etc. Verizon's VZAccess "dialer" software for Mac OS is as fully featured as the Windows version. Its stability and ease-of-use is great. I currently use this with my Powerbook 15" 1.67/HiRes and also us it with my Thinkpad T43 at work...very happy with the service!
